Completed 13 miles. Feet and equipment working well. Great Lake views. Drinking water is HEAVY, and none can be found at camp. Cold MREs are edible. Mosquitos are carrying away small children -- we took refuge in the tent at 6 PM. For some photos click Days1&2

Tuesday, August 5, 2003. Beautiful sunrise at 5:50 AM. Saw deer in camp. Had the trail all to ourselves. Completed first section at Spooner, a total of 23 miles so far.

Wednesday, August 6, 2003. Completed Spooner to Kingsbury segment. Started Kingsbury to Big Meadow portion -- expect to arrive at Big Meadows Friday morning. Again had great views of Tahoe. Weather fair but windy. Click Day 3

Friday, August 8, 2003. Completed Kingsbury to Big Meadow. Very hard segment, topped 9,721 feet with lots of up and down. Had lunch at Star Lake, first water from the trail. Click Day 5

Saturday, August 9, 2003. Hiked 16 miles from Big Meadow to Echo Summit. Most beautiful segment so far. Green meadows with wild flowers, lakes, and deer. We have completed half of the trail. Next 49 miles thru the Desolation Wilderness will take 3 1/2 days. There will be no resupply or news during this period, so the next post will be on Wednesday, August 13. Click Day 6

Tuesday, August 12, 2003. Interim report: Karen reported by cell phone that they were passing through the Barker Pass Trailhead at 1030 this morning. Thus they have hiked some 112 miles, or 68%, of the TRT.

Wednesday, August 13, 2003. Completed hike from Echo Lake to Tahoe City in 3 1/4 days.
Met other long distance hikers, Ron going solo from Yosemite to Meeks Bay (189 miles) and a couple completing 500 miles on the Pacific Crest Trail! And we thought we were going long distance!
We survived the hike, but the decision to leave the sleeping pads was a hard and rocky decision, at least the ground sure was without them. Saw many great views of lakes, mountains, and waaaaay over to the other side of the lake where we started.
About 20 minutes before arriving at Tahoe City we saw a BEAR and two CUBS! Right there next to the trail. The cubs ran to and flew up a tree while mom stood her ground and watched us. We took a picture, then had to walk closer to get by. Closer in this case means about 20 feet, but mom just watched us calmly as we tried to walk by nonchalantly. We have completed 134 miles, or 75% of the TRT. ?.Click

Thursday, August 14, 2003. Completed hike from Brockway Summit to Tahoe City.
Hiked this section as a day hike, 19 miles in 10 hours. Captured some great views of the lake and saw how much terrain we have covered. Only one more section (18.9 miles) and we are done. Taking today (Friday) as a rest day and will complete the hike on Saturday. We have completed 146 miles, or 88% of the TRT. ?.Click
Day11

Friday, August 15, 2003. Took the day off to recuperate for the final hike.

Saturday, August 16, 2003. Hiked from Tahoe Meadows to Brockway Summit, which completes the entire Tahoe Rim Trail!
We did it, we are
done!!!!!!!!!! Only 13 days, seven nights on the trail, six without ground pads (bad idea!).
A great sense of accomplishment! Click
